A total of 24,513 cases were registered in the area of responsibility of the Gelsenkirchen police last year, an increase of 7.5% compared to the previous year. This result represents the highest level of overall crime since 2015.
This contrasts with the successful investigative work of the Gelsenkirchen police, whose clearance rate has once again increased to 54.5%. This means that a suspect was identified in more than every second crime.
Increasing numbers of cases were also recorded in the areas of violent crimes, which include simple and dangerous bodily harm, extortion and threats, crimes against personal liberty and theft offenses.
The increase in street crime, i.e. crimes committed in public spaces, is particularly striking in 2023. This included particularly young suspects between the ages of 14 and 17. This represents an increase of 15.9 percent compared to the previous year.
The proportion of non-German suspects rose from 38.3 percent to 41.6 percent compared to the previous year.
In the area of property and forgery offenses, such as fraud, forgery of documents and counterfeiting of money, a decrease of 15.4 percent was recorded compared to the previous year.
The Gelsenkirchen police are analyzing the case numbers very closely in order to introduce targeted prevention measures in future with the aim of averting danger and prosecuting crimes.
